LIVING IN KUANTAN

ACCOMMODATION

UMP provides ample accommodation for all undergraduates and graduate students. There are five (5) residential colleges available on campus with the types of room as follows:

The accommodation consists of hostel blocks and terrace house. All rooms are fully furnished with beds, wardrobes, desks and fans. The hostel also houses facilities such as discussion rooms, cafeteria, reading room and TV rooms. Cafeteria, ATM machine and a sundry shop are easily accessible to the students. For postgraduate students’ families, a residential area for married students is located within the campus.

For mature students with families, you can search for a local private house for rent in the vicinity, within a 15-25km radius. Rentals for unfurnished 2-4 bedroom houses are usually set between RM700.00 – RM1, 000.00 (USD200.00 – USD300.00) per month.

COST OF LIVING

The cost of living in Kuantan, Pahang is relatively moderate which is around USD5,000 – USD 6,000 per year including food an lodging.

Kuantan, the state capital of Pahang, is located on the east coast and facing the South China Sea. It is fast developing into a modern commercial centre, yet retaining its unique age- old charms. Now, modern high-rise structures coexist harmoniously with pre-war shop houses and colonial buildings. Situated along the coast, Kuantan has several attractive beaches to visit.

SHOPPING & ENTERTAINMENT

There are several shopping complexes in Kuantan, with a wide variety of services. The stores at the shopping centers open usually after 10 am, and close at 10pm. Most stores are open seven days a week.The sprawling East Coast Mall, Kuantan Parade, Berjaya Megamall and Kuantan Plaza offer the best shopping anywhere on the East Coast. Complete with cineplexes, food courts and a diverse selection of trendy shops, these complexes offer a wide scope for entertainment and shopping. From daily groceries to fashion, every shop in these malls caters to everyone's needs.

For light casual shopping there are roadside stalls, night markets (pasar malams, in Malay)in Gambang on every Thursday where the major attraction is the bustling centres you can find lical delicacies and generally are on cash basis. Craft shops can be found at Medan Pelancong (Jalan Besar), Kompleks Kraftangan (Jalan Pintas), Sungai Karang and Cherating. Pandanus household articles, wood carvings and batik are sold at reasonable prices here. Places to shop for fine fabric include the Pahang Silk Weaving Center in Pulau Keladi, Pekan. Visitors can also witness how batik, a fabric with hand-painted or block motifs, is made at Batik in Tanah Putih.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

The student can use public transport such as public bus and taxi to go forth and back from UMP to Kuantan Town. The taxi fare is around RM 30 per trip. For Public Bus, students can take Rapid Kuantan. Fare starts from RM2 for traveling within a single zone and a maximum of RM4 for a journey crossing two zones.

In order to get to Kuantan Town, students can take the Bus from UMP , no. 100 to go to Hentian Bandar. From Hentian Bandar, students can take any bus depends on the students choice of destination :
